I‘ve been out backpacking in the High Sierra for a couple of days. I left the Renaissance Faire site on Monday morning and by late afternoon was hiking with my brother and two of my nieces. The colors of the junipers and ponderosas against the deep, clear sky struck me as an interesting color motif. Common lichen provides a pale green relief to the deep needle green. The sun brightened tips of the conifers sparkle against the darker sky. I look at scenery with a hunger for new color motifs to weave. I suppose that’s because it is so satisfying to try new colors. It is my favorite part...

The Northern California Renaissance Faire starts this weekend. I’ve been packing and preparing for weeks, ever since I came home from the Washington Renaissance Faire. Even though I know that early preparedness reduces my anxiety about forgetting things, here it is only hours before departure and the van’s not packed. Oh it’s mostly done; the inventory is in there…mostly. The loom parts and sales accessories are packed. But I have several hours of collecting and loading to do today. And today is departure day. I used to have a dog that would lie behind my van as I packed for a show....

I think that all I did all day yesterday was record and track and record  numbers.  Numbers, numbers, numbers.  I entered dollars and yards and pounds and pieces and formulae.  I calculated and cogitated and became exasperated. This is unfamiliar territory to me, this tracking, recording, and properly recording.  Persnickety, picky, fussy, these are the words I use to describe the work I’m doing.  I want to be creative and spontaneous, adaptable and loose, a free-spirit.  No wonder I resist the work, it’s as if by tracking numbers I am loosing what I consider the best part of myself. It...

I’m still in California putting the finishing touches on my booths.  The Northern California Renaissance Faire doesn’t start until September 12, so I’ll have a couple of weeks at home to work and live.  It’s been 29 years of travel and shows.  My heart is getting a little homesick for time at home. The colors are different here.  Compared to Oregon it is very yellow.  I grew up in the Bay Area and these yellow hills dotted with live oaks seemed normal.  Now I’m used to the lush Oregon forests and my old familiar hills seem foreign.  Every time I drive north to go home I am struck...

I’m at Casa de Fruta on Pacheco Pass setting up for the Northern California Renaissance Faire.  Wasn’t I just tearing down at the Washington Renaissance and Fantasy Faire?  After 23 hours at home I’m on the road again. I have plenty of time allotted to the project; 2 days to set up two booths and my living space.  I have noticed that I don’t judge time well.  I’ve started playing a game with myself.  I estimate how long a project will take and then I time myself.  I almost always over-estimate the amount of time physical projects will take.  For internal changes, I tend to under-estimate...
